Phire CMS Forum - Development In this forum, any topic regarding Phire development, or just poking around under the hood in general, can be discussed. https://phirecms.org/list.php?7 Sat, 17 Mar 2012 00:45:46 -0500 Phorum 5.2.15a https://phirecms.org/read.php?7,146,150#msg-150 Re: Separating Pages from Article Content https://phirecms.org/read.php?7,146,150#msg-150
If so, I do think that's a good idea to consider. Currently, there's only minimal filtering of pages via sections, either by using the page search form at the bottom of the page listing results and filtering by section, or by clicking the "Sections" ordering tab at the top of the page listing view. Either way, those are only "quick and dirty" ways to view pages of a section, and wouldn't help as much with a persistent view if you had many pages in one section.

So, if I am understanding your suggestion correctly, then I definitely think it's a good idea and it will be a considered feature for the next version.

Thanks!

Nick

So on the home page we show all our articles no matter what they are tagged as. However, we also have individual pages for each tagged item such as news, reviews, help, download, videos, devices. My suggestion was to have in the CMS admin area a section for pages which hold the main pages of news, reviews, help, download, videos, devices. You would edit these to showcase your articles appropriately and differently from the home page. Then in a DIFFERENT area in the admin area would hold a section for just news articles, just reviews articles and so on. Basically this allows us to have a separation in the admin area of the main page and the admin area that holds the articles.

I hope this makes sense? I think it would be convenient to not have 100s or pages and pages when all you want to work on it the layout page and not the content of the pages.]]>

I'm trying to fully understand your suggestion.

First, just as an FYI, here are some new features with v1.1.2 that may or may not be what you're looking for:

You can use the following special case placeholder to drop a page's content on another page or section:

[{page_#ID#}]

So, for example, if a page has the ID 8010 and you want to drop it's content within another page's content, you can simply put

[{page_8010}]

within that page's content to display it there.

Also, within sections, if you'd like to have a summary of the page content display you can use this placeholder:

[{page_content_#}]

where # is the number of characters to display for the summary, such as

[{page_content_150}]

will display 150 characters of the page content.

Also, there is now support for archives, to generate a group listing of pages or articles you've posted based on date. Here are the placeholders for that:

[{archive}]
[{archive_m}]
[{archive_#SECTION_ID#}]
[{archive_m_#SECTION_ID#}]

The [{archive}] and [{archive_#SECTION_ID#}] placeholders filter the articles by year, either site-wide or within a section, respectively. With the "_m" designated, it filters them by month. I have an example on my blog here: [nicksagona.com]

Also, you can access pages/articles archives via a date-based URL filter as well, such as:

yourdomain.com/2011
yourdomain.com/2011/07
yourdomain.com/2011/07/05

And, last but not least, you can nest sections within sections. I actually did that on my blog. The main section is the home page at '/' and each piece of the main nav, "design," "development," etc is a sub-section of the main section.

Let me know if anything that helps, of your idea/suggestion entails something else, and we can look to see if we can get it into the next version.

Thanks,

Nick

I think I could be happy with either approach. I am a website designer and the sort of solutions I am likely to put together for small business would not require complex forum functionality and administration. In fact that is one of the things that drew me to Vanilla (http://vanillaforums.org/features/embed-vanilla). Simple to use and administer, designed to be embedded in any CMS or blog etc and mobile friendly. It struck me as a good fit for your PhireCMS.]]>

Anyway, funny that you mention forums, b/c it's on the list of plugins I'd like to develop, utilizing the built-in members functionality. Ideally, what I'd like to do is build a simple forum plugin that uses that, OR take a look at your idea, which is interesting as well. Perhaps a plugin can be built that hooks the built-in member functionality into a pre-existing forum application to leverage that app's features. That way, we're not re-inventing the wheel so much.

I haven't tried Vanilla yet - I'll have to get it a shot. Oddly enough, I chose Phorum for this forum only b/c I attempted to install the latest version of phpBB and there was some critical bug that wouldn't let you log back in as an admin. It was very strange. So, I jumped over to Phorum and found it extremely easy to install, get up and running and style.

Anyway, I'll try to take a look at writing some type of forum plugin sometime in the near future. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks,

I have just come across this application and spent a couple of hours soaking it up. Well done to the developers - the core features are excellent. I particularly like Sections.

I am considering setting up PhireCMS with a members area, and my members will need a forum. Has any work been done with regard to integrating a forum (perhaps Vanilla or this one - Phorum) so that when members sign in to the members area they are automatically signed in to the members forum as well? i.e. a single sign on. This would be extremely useful in any member site.

The latest version of Vanilla is particularly ease to embed and would go well with PhireCMS.

Thanks in advance, Michael.]]>
